Background
The Tribe
In the large spruce forests north of the Empire live many small clusters of Tiefling communities. One such community is that of Myoran and his family: the Veahka. Consisting of a few larger families–family being very important to the Veahka–the tribe resides in a cave system on the edge of the northern spruce forest. The Tieflings have respect for the forest and protect it from outsiders, as they are very nature focused, druidic even. As common among many Tiefling cultures, the religion of the Veahka takes inspiration from the Pantheon of the Norse Gods, while their culture and language is based upon the (old) Nordic and Samic cultures, specifically those in present-day Finland.
The Attack
When a detachment of human soldiers from the Empire set up a fortified camp near the Veahka, the elders decided to stay low and not interact them as to not accidentally provoke them. The humans were however desecrating the forest, and the younger generation of Tieflings – among them Myoran and his siblings – felt something must be done.
A couple of the young Tieflings went out to inquire what the humans were up to, and possibly ask or tell them to stop. An incident occurred in which Máddji, Myoran's sister, got fatally wounded by a spooked human. The details of what exactly happened, and who might have been to blame for what are unclear.
Whatever the intent, the humans were now aware of and on the look out for the Tieflings, and the family was mourning a tragic death. What resulted was an aggressive retaliation by the parents of the tribe, lead by the wrath-driven father Vállju. In the resulting fight the humans would sustain some losses, but their response would turn out to be decisive: Many of the Veahka Tieflings ended up wounded or dead, among them Vállju. Myoran and his brother Mohkku were captured, leaving behind the grief-stricken mother Ruvsá. The few members of the tribe who weren't captured or killed fled. Those who were captured were sent out across the Empire.
In Captivity
Myoran was first sent to a military encampment just south of the Spruce Forest, together with many of the other Veahka Tieflings. There more prisoners of war were collected from the diverse tribes of Tieflings the humans came across while crossing the Forest. Mere days later, Myoran was taken to a mining work-camp further south. There he was used as muscle and mule.
In the time Myoran spent at the camp (which would end up being well over a year), Myoran got acquainted with his prison-guard: Wade. While all together not a particularly nice man, he did show some modicum of sympathy towards Myoran, acknowledging he is not just a beast, but a being with a deeper inner world.
After an unsuccessful escape attempt, Wade explained him how that was not too great of an idea: Humans do not react well to what is in their eyes a dangerous wild beast running around, and the normal response is to kill said dangerous wild beast as quickly as possible. It is much safer to stay captive–even if it's uncomfortable–than to take a chance on being murdered. Over the year the two grew something of a bond. Myoran learned very basic Common through the sporadic conversations with Wade and by listening to the other conversations at the camp. One day Wade even introduced Myoran to his pet hamster Winston.
His stay at the camp would be interrupted when one day Wade told him he was going to Alcathia Nova to participate in some kind of game. Wade emphasized he managed to pull a few strings to prevent a fate far worse, but he couldn't do more for him. Myoran was then carted of to take part in the Tri-Arch Tournament.
